After a long dry summer, the first real rain of the season catches a lot of drivers off guard. If this winter brings the heavy storms an El Niño pattern can deliver, a few small checks now can save you from a scary moment on the 405 or a surprise repair bill later. Here is the list we run through at Beach House Imports.
1. Replace tired wiper blades
Wiper rubber bakes in the sun all summer, then cracks, hardens and lifts off the glass. Signs it is time: streaks, chattering, squeaking, or a hazy film after each swipe. Blades are inexpensive and take minutes to swap, but they matter most in heavy rain, when visibility is everything. 2. Check your tire tread and pressure
Tires are the only part of your Audi that touches the road, and worn tread is the leading cause of hydroplaning. Try the quarter test: insert a quarter upside down into the tread. If you can see the top of Washington’s head, your tread is getting low. Also check for uneven wear, which can point to an alignment or suspension issue, and confirm pressure while the tires are cold. Audi’s recommended pressure is on the sticker inside the driver’s door jamb.
3. Inspect your brakes
Wet pavement lengthens stopping distances. Squealing, a soft pedal, or a pulsing feel under braking are all worth a look before the storms arrive. A quick inspection of pads, rotors and brake fluid is one of the best safety checks you can do.
4. Test your battery, lights and defrost
Short, cold, dark commutes are hard on aging batteries. Make sure every headlight, taillight and brake light works, and that your defrost and A/C clear a foggy windshield fast. A fresh cabin air filter helps too.
5. Don’t forget your driver-assistance systems
Modern Audis rely on cameras and sensors for lane assist, adaptive cruise and automatic braking. Rain, a cracked windshield or a recent glass replacement can throw these off. If a warning light appears or you have had windshield work done, ADAS calibration keeps those systems accurate. We handle it in-house.

Rain lifts oil from the road surface, so the first hour of a storm is the slickest. Slow down, leave extra following distance, avoid standing water, and skip cruise control on wet roads.
